Eelgrass Protection Program

FRIENDS of the San Juans is working to reduce boating impacts to eelgrass habitats through education and on-the-ground restoration.

FRIENDS Eelgrass Restoration Project is a pilot program that works with interested landowners to upgrade or relocate mooring buoys that are located in eelgrass.  FRIENDS will also study how well the eelgrass recovers after buoy designs are upgraded or they are relocated outside of eelgrass beds.  FRIENDS will work with local buoy installers, a small number of interested landowners, and eelgrass experts to improve our understanding of buoy designs and eelgrass habitat impacts.  The results of this pilot program will guide future voluntary protection efforts.

FRIENDS Eelgrass Protection Outreach Program, provides information to boaters on the location of eelgrass as well as simple tips for protecting this critical habitat.  Local marinas and our many marine parks are distributing maps and information developed by FRIENDS.  Click here to see our Eelgrass Protection Brochure (pdf)
